Virginia Criminal History is a private reference resource, not a records office. Questions about official Virginia criminal records must go to the government custodian that maintains the requested item. Depending on the record, that may be Virginia State Police, the Virginia Department of Corrections, a court clerk, a police department, a sheriff, or a local or regional jail. The directions below identify the proper statewide route and point local requests to the directory of 107 Virginia project jurisdictions.

This Is Not a Government Office. Virginia Criminal History is privately operated. We cannot retrieve an official record, conduct a government criminal history check, correct or remove an entry, or receive a sealing or expungement filing. Contact the responsible Virginia agency or court directly.

Need an Official Record?

Use the Virginia custodian that matches the record:

  • Virginia criminal histories, rap sheets, and official checks: use the Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange
  • Court dockets and case documents: consult the Virginia court case routes and the clerk for the court that handled the matter
  • State custody or supervision status: search the Virginia Department of Corrections Inmate and Supervisee Locator
  • Incident and police reports: request the record from the law-enforcement agency that created it
  • Sealing or expungement filings: contact the circuit court tied to the eligible case and use current Virginia court forms
  • Local bookings, jail rosters, and local court files: choose the county or independent city in the Virginia jurisdiction directory

The statewide repository is the Virginia Department of State Police, Central Criminal Records Exchange, Criminal Justice Information Services Division.
